We are sure that you would agree that if a parent were asked, “What would you do to protect your child?” the main response would be ANYTHING!
Caring for our children begins even while in the womb. Mothers make sure they eat right and stay away from harmful chemicals that can affect the healthy development of the baby.
After the child is born we feed, clothe, and take care of all its needs. When they begin to toddle around we find ourselves child-proofing our homes. We cover up electrical outlets, lock up cleaning supplies and medicines, and put barricades near stairs and other places where they could get hurt.
However, is there more that we can and should do for our children?
While locking up household chemicals and drugs is something that all parents should do, can we not perhaps go one step further in the safety and protection of our children?
While we lock up our chemicals so that our children cannot reach the actual bottles, what about when we use these same chemicals in our cleaning? We use them on our floors, counters, carpets, furniture, children’s toys, walls, windows, mirrors and so on.
Our children are touching these chemicals and breathing them in, as are we, and it is causing untold health dangers that are accumulative and causes major health issues down the road.
A common health issue that is getting ever more attention due to poor ventilation and the increasing use of harmful chemicals in our homes is being called Sick Building Syndrome, commonly known as SBS.
Since it is estimated that we spend more than 90% of our lives inside buildings, be it at home or at work, it is vital to know if our environment is healthy, for us and for our family.
Educating ourselves on this issue is something that should concern everyone, as it affects everyone, young and old.
Some of the symptoms of SBS include such things as:
- Irritation of the eyes, nose and throat
- Upper respiratory symptoms
- Dry, red mucous membranes and skin
- Lower airway symptoms
Is there anything we can do about this growing health hazard?
Fortunately, to a large degree, there is!
First of all it is important to making sure our homes are well ventilated to allow for outdoor air flow is essential in helping to combat this problem.
The second way our family suffers from SBS is from all the various chemicals that are in our homes. These chemicals are found in ordinary things such as:
- Manufactured wood products
- Cleaning agents
One such health hazard is known as Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). These VOC's are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. These gases may have short and/or long term adverse health effects on you and your family.
“But I don’t have such chemicals in my home, I am careful about what I buy.”
Consider where such gases come from and reflect again on if your home has these compounds …
- Paint strippers
- Cleaning supplies
- Office equipment such as copiers and printers
- Correction fluids and carbonless copy paper
- Graphics and craft materials including glues and adhesives, permanent markers, and photographic solutions
Organic chemicals are also widely used as ingredients in all kinds of common household products.
- Varnishes and wax all contain organic solvents
- Cleaning and disinfecting products
- Degreasing agents,
- Hobby products
- Fuels are made up of organic chemicals
All of these products can release organic compounds while you are using them, and, to some degree, even when they are stored.
Obviously, there is a very serious problem, and one that we need to do something about.
We need to educate ourselves on what we can control in our own environment, and one such way is using products that won’t be harmful to it.
However, you may be thinking that I NEED all these products to do different jobs in cleaning my home!
